Excelling in a foreign country as a refugee is never easy, but Mozhdah Jamalzadah defied the odds and became a music icon through the debut of her hit single, Afghan Girl. She is an alumnus of British Columbia University, and this is where she recorded that first single. She sought refuge in music after fleeing with her family from Afghanistan during the civil war. She was only five when they settled in Canada.
